My Oksana trying to cook, vaccume, and take care of baby.
I couldn’t multi-task even if my life depended on it. Attempting to multi-task would short circuit my brain. My mind would be spinning in circles a million miles a minute. The keyword in that sentence is “spinning”. Spinning around in circles doesn’t get me anywhere.
Now why would we want to end up nowhere? Let’s all end up somewhere. Focused and moving ahead with your goals.
Multitasking
Multitasking refers to the ability of an individual or machine to perform more than one task, or multiple tasks, at the same time. In the field of human resources, multitasking is a popular term that is often used to describe how busy managers or business practitioners are able to accomplish a growing amount of work in a limited time period. The term was popularized in the late 1990s with the increasing move to a 24-hours-per-day, seven-days-per-week work and service culture experienced in the U.S. The term has grown to define people in their roles as employees, parents, family members, and any number of other roles they perform simultaneously as they try to balance business and pleasure in a limited amount of time.
From the introduction you get a wonderful idea of how I view multitasking.
Is multi-tasking actually helpful? Now I know that there a lot of views on this. I do feel that multi-tasking is helpful when you have kids and you need to get supper on the table, laundry in the cloths washer, horses fed and the list goes on and on.
I am fine with running certain tasks that are embedded into my cells and I can run on auto pilot. I have tried to work this way with my business and in some respect I still do, but it is all business related. I do not try and tackle laundry, kids, meals etc when tackling my business.
I have gotten into the habit of putting my “blinders” on so to speak to the rest of the world and work. If I am working on my blog I just work on my blog. I can come up with quite a few posts at once. If I am working on designing silicone molds I just design silicone molds. Again I will come up with quite a few designs at once. If I am working on learning, you’ve got it, I learn and can retain a lot more information when I am concentrating on what I am learning.
Now how do you get to that point of putting “blinders” on? What do you do?
First of all what are blinders?
this keeps the horse focused on what is in front of him, encouraging him to pay attention to the race rather than other distractions, such as crowds. Additionally, blinkers (then usually known as winkers) are commonly seen on driving horses, to keep them from being distracted or spooked, especially on crowded city streets.- Wikipedia
Now isn’t that a great tool. Just to be able to focus on what is ahead or in front of you would be a blessing.
Your blinders consist of:
1. Removing any distractions- I have a specific place to work without any distractions. All of my business items are in my business room. I used to run my business anywhere in the house like the kitchen, bedroom, living room. But I would end up cleaning up the area.
2. Set times for certain tasks- We are now in the world of social media, which I may add is a lot of fun. Now social media rivals reading emails. Both are vying for our time, but what needs our time the most? Our business. Set certain times when to do social media, emails and the like. That is all the time you would donate to that task.
3. Use External Memory- You maybe thinking what is this. This is when you would use post it notes, and paper to help keep you on track of your daily ongoings. It is much more easier to be creative and write when your mind is not cluttered with everything.
4. Have Certain Tasks Run On Auto Pilot- I love this and I am using this a lot more to my advantage. There are some tasks that you can have timed. Take for example having your computer scan for viruses and spyware. It is automatically done if you have the task already scheduled. That example is to easy. Another example is to prepare meals in a crock pot. Then you do not have to worry about getting a meal around later. This brings me to my next point.
5. Prepare Certain Things in Advance- Have your meals already prepared for the whole week. Have all the ingredients taken care of so all you have to do is put the ingredients into the crock pot and let the crock pot do its thing. I do this one all the time and I love it. I do not have to be on pins and needles wondering what to make, when I should start preparing. Because my most creative part of the day is the afternoon and that is when I have to get meals around. I do not want to have to pull myself away from a project when I am going full bore. My family also needs to eat. Voila! You’ve got a meal.
6. Delegate Tasks- Figure out tasks that you do not want to do or that would ease your day. Sometimes you may be using a virtual assistant to help you with blog posts or you may have your kids helping clean the house. Delegate. Delegate. Delegate.
Out of all of them I use numbers 1,4 and 5 the most. What ones do you use?
Share your insight.
Many Blessings,
