Etsy Journey Pt #1

etsyOkay! Okay! I  tried sell on Etsy this past February, but I did NOT make a dime. I did get a couple people that “favorited” me. That was pretty neat.

What did I do wrong? Did I not get the pics right, the description right? How do I get people to notice me especially where there are so many great crafters in this selling medium.

My First Goal
At this moment I am looking at Etsy as a traffic driver. I do hope that it will do more for me in the long run, but this will be my first goal. I want to get potential customers signed up for my newsletter, and to look through my main store. I need to establish credibility among the Etsy regular buyers.

When I signed up and started putting products into the store I wrote out a quick bio, profile and other tidbit info. Mistake number one I didn’t put any real thought  into it.

To help you start off on a great foot it is beneficial to read through the forum and get acquainted with everyone. Now I am going to the Etsy forum, looking at all the great info and reading the blogs.

But who has time to read through all that?

I am here to help you focus on the important stuff. Let’s cut out all the fluff and get down to the nitty gritty of having an Etsy account or any consignment shop account. Here are a couple other shops that I know of Artfire and Zibbet you may want to look into.

I think it is great to have other shops if you have the time to invest. They are a great way to drive traffic to your website and gain a following of people that eventually will start shopping at your main site. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket in trying to market your products. Put your eggs in baskets that you know work.

This market is not getting swallowed up. It is not going anywhere. With Etsy the public already knows about it. The advertising and marketing is already done.
You just have to get yourself noticed and present a great Etsy shop.

I did dive right back into my site. Listed only 2 items, but then I was thinking why didn’t I get any orders before or more traffic? I started exploring areas of the shop that were weak.

First and foremost I needed to change my shop sales copy and my bio. I am so not good at writing these. I knew that if I am to make a serious go of it I had to get something great pumped out.

Here are some pointers that I found so useful in developing a nice “to the point”  bio and introduction.

  • Focus on what is great. W hat you can do. Nothing negative
  • Make sure your bio reflects your personality
  • Be original and creative
  • Show your fun side
  • Make it personal, but not too personal
  • Maybe put where you live and what do you do. Writing about family may or  may not appeal to your target. You will have to make the call on that.
  • Write in first person NOT third
  • Share your passion of what you create and how you started,
  • What inspired you to create
  • What still inspires you
  • Include some quotes or comments

Here is my Etsy Bio.

Tell me what you think of my bio.
