Building Your Own Light Box

by dawnaurora on November 17, 2009

picwithboxI am not much of a photographer, but I do have a formula down that works. I can get pics up and running within 5 minutes. The problem that I encounter is that since I use sunlight for all of my pics some times the sun stays hidden behind the clouds. At one point I waited 3 days before I got my pics up on the site. What do you do then especially since your business relies on good quality pictures?

I wanted to find a cheap and simple solution to having great light for picture taking. This is what I found. I did not have to spend a dime. I found everything in my husbands work area and in my sewing and scrapbooking stuff.

I have seen these light boxes or tents go for $150. Who can afford that?

Materials Needed to Construct Your Own Photography Light Box:

  1. Cardboard Box
  2. White Muslin Material
  3. Scissors
  4. Tape
  5. Bright white thick paper.  I used white scrapbooking cardstock
  6. Clip light
  7. Daylight light bulb

  • First I went into my kindling pile and found a cardboard box. Mine is 12″ X 12″ X 12″‘ but you can get any size that you need for your picture taking items.  I cut out an 9″ X 9″ portion on the top and 2 sides.  I left the bottom and back of the box alone.

  • Then I went cut the white muslin to cover the 9″ X 9″ squares on the top and sides
  • I taped the white muslin on

  • I taped the white scrapbook cardstock on the back and bottom of the box

If you want to learn more about taking photos of your products here is a nice photographers blog.

This cheap photography light box only took 10 minutes to construct after I found everything.  Now I can take pictures day or night.  Let me know how you made your light box.  I would enjoy hearing about your project.

Many Blessings,
Dawn

P.S. Go out and take those grand pictures
