How To Work With Problematic Soy Wax

Soy is a more natural candle wax.  It is described as a veggie wax.   Obtaining odd results with soy wax are high due to soy being a vegetable wax.  Any triumphs and tribulations that you can have with soy, you probably will have.

That is why it is so important to test any candle, melt, pillar, votive you make especially when you try out a new fragrance oil, container, wick additive and any other ingredient that you put in.

Because of soy being a veggie  wax there are a variety of odd results you encounter. These odd results create a “cauliflower topped” candle, pour lines, frosting, muted color, some fragrance oils render no smell. The results leave you with a “mutant” looking non-smelling  soy wax candle.

If you are having these problems, try tackling the problematic soy candle by a process of elimination.
The process of elimination steps:

  • Check to see if the problem is using  a new scent
  • The pour temperature
  • The temperature that you add fragrance oil
  • The temperature you put a lid on a jar candle
  • How fast the candle cools off

If you noticed, a majority of these steps to eliminate a soy wax candle problem relate to temperature.  Soy wax is very sensative to temperature.

Soy candles are best served fresh.  When they are kept in storage for too long the chemical makeup of soy changes.  The  wax expands when stored.  If you have to store your candles or tarts keep the storage temperature consistently cool.  This will help prevent any odd morphing.

Don’t let these problems deter from trying soy wax.  In my opinion soy wax is pretty fun to work with.  When you do find your soy wax formula this veggie wax will be sure to please your customers and have them coming back over and over again.

Soy candles are like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you’ll get…

Many Blessings,

Dawn
