How To Make Soy Candles In Colder Temperatures

How is your soy candle making going? Right now with my basement averaging around 65 degrees, it is difficult to get my soy candles looking the way I want. I do have a wood stove down here, but sometimes I can get the wood stove going and sometimes I cannot.

I made a contraption that would help reduce frosting and adverse effects of colder temperatures on my soy wax candles.

The cooler temperatures of winter adversely effect wicking and create more frosting with your soy candles. Depending where you live – humidity will effect the rate at which your candles burn. Testing is crucial in obtaining the best burn for your soy. A soy candle burned in a 70 degree room burns differently than in a 65 degree room.

About Soy Candle Wax Wicking
Soy is a harder wax and therefore lasts longer when burned. Because soy is a harder wax a larger (hotter) wick is needed to maintain a flame.

When soy is burned in a cooler room the positive attributes of soy start to adversely affect the burn properties of the wax. These factors (cooler room ; cooler burn) combined make it difficult for the wick to maintain the wax pool because it is not hot enough. Eventually the wax pool disappears and the flame goes out because there is not any liquid wax to keep it going. The wick becomes brittle and ashy. You need to increase the wick size to keep the flame going and to obtain a good melt pool.

Preventing Excessive Frost

A problem that I hear amongst soy candle makers is that they do not like the frost look on the tops of their candles. Personally I do not feel that the customers mind. Actually, I like the frost look because it looks natural.

The idea behind decreasing the frosty appearance is to slow down the cooling process. Here are some tips.
1. You can place your candles in a styrofoam container on top of a cookie rack.
~the cookie rack helps even the circulation around your candles

How is your soy wax behaving?
