Making A Primitive Grungy Can Candle

I love to recycle. I love the primitive look and I love to be creative. All of these aspects about me lead to this fun candle container project.
grungy.5Maybe you have seen these around and are wondering how they have made a grungy can candle. It is so easy.

Materials Needed:

  • Mod Podge
  • Small Paint Brush
  • Black Spray Paint
  • Spices Your Choice or coffee grounds
  • Tin Can from your recyle bin
  • Wax
  • Wick
  • Fragrance oil

1. Make sure your can is clean.  Clean out any leftover food residue.  Mine was a chilly can.  I definitely did not want my candle smelling like chilly when burned

2.  Spray paint your tin can as many times as needed to cover the can fully.  I sprayed mine 3 times before I covered it

3. Paint on a layer of mod podge with your paint brush

4. Shake your spice all over the can and cover it as much as you want

5. Let it dry

6. I went to my handy dandy office word program and printed out some words to put on my can

7. I took a lit match and singed the edges of the paper containing my chosen words

8.  Mod podge your candle tin again.  Place your picture on the candle and mod podge on that

9. Let everything dry

10. Glue and center your wick to the bottom of the can

11. Have your wax and fragrance oil all ready mixed and pour into the can

Viola!! Your primitive grungy can candle look.

I am going to make quite a few of these up for my family with scripture on the label.  What do you do to dress up your cans?

Many Blessings,

Dawn

what is a grungy?

It is when you add cinnamon or some kind of spice to your can or candle to give it a primitive feel.
Hope that helps. This is a great thing for the primitive candle and soap line.

I am working on several ideas for outside the can (inside is already figured out…right down to the berry topper I now have, thanks to you. Love it!) I like the mod podge idea, I tried just spray painting, and found that when I did the test burn I smelled paint more than the candle. Hopefully the mod podge will eliminate that! Thanks!

Yeah! I didn’t have any problems with the paint smell. Maybe the modge podge seals it up. Try even setting the can outside to get rid of the smell.
I am so glad you like the topper. They fit perfect on my full 5 inch pie crust. Going to make some soap like that. That will come out neat I think.
