This morning my daughter, Oksana, asked me if I knew what “primitive” meant. Sadly I didn’t have a clue. I only knew that primitive was a style of decor that dictated an earlier time period. Well, she informed me that primitive meant original. I never thought of primitive meaning original. I asked her if she was sure and in her vocabulary test it did say original. She received 100% on that test by the way.

Did you know this about primitive? Like I said I always correlated it with a certain style. Not a creativity style of an artisan.
Of course when she left for school I ran into her bedroom looking for the dictionary. I wanted to see for myself exactly what it meant.

What details of primitive can you relate too? I can relate to “original, a self-taught artist, and an artist of an early period of a culture or artistic movement.”
The first images that come to mind when I hear the word primitive are crows, sheep, goats, saltbox houses, willow trees, stars and hearts. Why do those images steal the primitive show? Maybe that is what our foundational artisans created.
What I really took away from the definition is that from an artisan angle primitive means original and a self-taught artisan. I thrive on creating original designs and coming up with unique ideas. I am constantly looking at what other mold makers have and I try to fill in the gaps. I also look at what the trends are in magazines. Those are the ideas that get me going and keep me up late at night, with so excitement with what the next day brings for me.
Primitive evokes a simpler time, with simple foundations of family and truth. Primitive doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone is without stress,but stress is reduced because of the way of life. Life free from TV, electronic gadgets and the like.
So, my journey through creating primitive soaps and candles for you I am creating simplicity, originality and creativity.
