Finances are tight. You have one income coming into your household and you need or want to financially help out your family. You come up with a brilliant idea. You decide to start a home based candle making business.
The problem is you don’t have much money to spend. What do you do? You know it takes time and money to get the business off the ground. Where to you invest your money so it works the best for you and your new business.
Does this sound like the situation you are in? What do you do when you have literally pennies in your pocket and you need to get your home based candle making business going to help supplement your income?
I will tell you first what not to do?
- Don’t start immediately buying supplies
- Don’t think that you have to do what other candle makers are making
- Don’t go into a candle making business without a goal
What to do?
1. Find your candle making niche.
- Just knowing your are going to make candles is too general. Are you going to make jar candles, tarts or both, use soy wax or paraffin? There are more decisions you will have to make.
- Know your selling season – this will determine what fragrance oils to start buying.
2. Do a lot of research in your home based candle business niche.
- There is a lot of information on the net. There are also a lot of candle making forums where seasoned candle makers are willing to help you out. Gather as much info that you can, but make sure that it is in-line with your goal. If your goal is to make soy candles and tarts, don’t explore paraffin alternatives.
- Explore wax and fragrance oil reviews. Reviews will supply a lot of information both positive and negative.
3. Do a candle supply research.
- Start searching for good prices . Look at surrounding suppliers. Buying from a close supplier helps reduce shipping costs.
4. Make an allowance for time and money to test out products before you start selling.
- Do not ever bypass this step. Okay if time is of the essence, why don’t you start making the simple products. What I consider simple are melts or tarts. A lot of money isn’t tied up in making melts and tarts. You don’t have to worry about testing wicks and jars. Customers enjoy tarts because of the price and the ability to change out scents when they want. Tarts and melts are an easy seller.
- Because you know what season you are going to start selling in, only buy the fragrance oils that are popular during that time. I would start off with the favorite scents of the season.
- Let your friends and family test them out. Give your friends or family a spreadsheet to fill out with the most important aspects of your candle.
5. Surround yourself with friends and family that support your home based candle business.
- Your support system will be the most important driving force to help you achieve your candle business status. They will cheer you on when you feel like the world is caving in. They will keep believing in you when you do not believe in yourself. Don’t start your business without them.
Now, you have done all your research. You know exactly where you want to put your money to make the most impact. Start making the wise decisions to get your home based candle business up and running.
Happy Candle Business Journey!
