I was browsing around on the net the other day and came across a blog that was selling candles and tarts. The owner of the blog was doing exactly what I have talked about in theory. But there were several mistakes within their blog that decreased their chances of keeping visitors on their site and most important making a sale.
Their blog was working against them. Remember – first impressions can make or break you. Unfortunately, the first impression of this particular blog was breaking their business. Don’t let this happen to you.
Here are the top 5 mistakes made in trying to sell from your blog and how to easily avoid them.
Mistake #1 - Misspellings
- Solution- Use your spell checker and/or have someone critique your post. Since you have taken the time to put together a post for your visitors make your blog work for you. Seeing a lot of misspellings is a major turnoff.
Mistake #2 - BUY! BUY! BUY!
- Solution – Yes, every post there should be a call to action and even a buy call to action, but do not make every post a buying call to action. The definition of a blog is a web style journal- weblog hence “blog”. Mix your blog with relevant information that your visitors are looking for. Give your visitors other sites that they might be interested in. Don’t let it be all about you.
- Exception to the rule – Unless your blog is set up like a business site and has a static page.
Mistake #3- Blurry Pictures
- Solution – Take clearer pictures or have someone help you out here. I understand if your equipment isn’t up to date, but at least make them clear. Allow your visitors to know exactly what they are looking at. Take advantage of using good pictures. Your visitors will browse your site a lot longer with good pictures.
Mistake #4 – Not listening to your visitors
- Solution – You visitors and target market will offer clues to what they are looking for. Provide for them a solution to their problem.
- Here are some easy clues that will help you figure out what they want – “I hate it when..” , ” Why doesn’t somebody..” , “I wish..”, “If only..”, “What we need is..”.
- You can also find out what your audience wants by participating in social media, such as, twitter.com, facebook.com, friendfeed.com, etc.
Mistake #5 – Selling something that there isn’t a market for.
- Solution – Do your research. Make sure there is a market out there for your product. It is so disheartening to sink your time and effort into a product and not have someone to sell it to.
